Black Emergence: Traveling Mercies to the Desert Sun
Black Emergence is a short film meditation on migration, memory and belonging. Presented by Instituto, the film weaves together the story of the Jackson family with reflections on the many ways Black matriarchs create home across generations and geographies.
Black River Life partnered with Instituto from concept to completion.
Our team designed and facilitated a day-long family gathering centered on matriarchy, displacement and envisioning the family's future, while leading pre-production planning and on-site videography. We then guided months of post-production to produce the final 18-minute documentary.
Today, the Black Emergence documentary is a tool in Instituto's work organizing families around land, belonging and intergenerational leadership.

Our friends at the Media 2070 Project invited Black River Life to participate in Black Future Newsstand Presents: Riot to Repair, a soundscape exhibition that premiered in Los Angeles in 2025 and welcomed more than 100 attendees over two days.
The exhibition brought together media technologists, journalists, students, artists and funders through five immersive installations exploring the power of reparative media, art and technology.
Black River Life presented Reverberations, a 15-minute immersive soundscape that guides listeners through a shifting emotional journey—from quiet contemplation to defiant resistance and, ultimately, glimpses of a liberated future. The piece features a curated collection of audio interviews created in partnership with the Charlotta Bass Journalism and Justice Lab at USC Annenberg and the Media 2070 Project.
